10 Questions with Sergiu-Sebastian Itu (Rally Co-Driver)

How did it all start for you?

Even though this is a family “business”, it was never planned. Of course I dreamt about following in my father’s footsteps but, I actually had other plans back then. So in 2011 I had the opportunity to start in an unofficial rally. I just wanted to see what being a co-driver is like, I just wanted to do it for fun. Then, in 2012 Raul (Badiu) asked me to do the whole season with him, and I just couldn’t say “no” to that. The season went really well, so I joined Napoca Rally Academy at the end of the year. That was the moment I understood that I can become a professional co-driver.

What is the most difficult thing about being a rally co-driver?

If you love what you’re doing, nothing is difficult. You just have to be a bit fearless, and to be able to keep calm in every situation.

If you weren’t a rally co-driver, what would you be doing?

Trying to become a sports psychologist most likely.

What is the best/worst road car you have ever driven?

Ok, this is a funny one. The Subaru Justy my mom used to own was actually both the best, and the worst car I’ve ever driven. It was old, it was slow, and it was literally a square block on wheels. But my God was it fun when winter came. AWD Subarus are undying, and so much fun to drive!

What would your ideal sandwich have on it?

Tricky question. The core would be tuna, cheddar and jalapenos. Other things can be added, depending on my mood.

What car(s) do you own now and what’s your daily driver?

I own a 2006 Audi A3, 2.0 TDI, quattro. And I’m really satisfied with it.

Favorite car of all time?

This is impossible to answer. There’s absolutely no way I can only choose one. I think I could come up with a different answer each time you ask me. But, it will almost always be either a BMW 3.0 CSL, a 1974 Porsche 911 or a ‘67 Mustang. You choose one ... if you can!

Do you have any points on your driver’s license?

As of yet, no. I was never caught speeding, or anything else. I did have a parking fine though ...

RWD, AWD or FWD and why?

I don’t really think it matters. I think you can have tons of fun with all of the above. It’s just that you have to adapt your driving style on the traction you have.

If you could be someone else for a day (dead or alive) who would you be?

McRae. Colin McRae. I’d love to feel what it’s like being the best and most loved rally driver of all time. Also, he drove a Prodrive works Gr. A 555 Subaru Impreza. Now who wouldn’t want that?
